Summary
Group project to re-design and simplify the Howdy course scheduling work flow for Texas A&M.
Problem Statement
During course registration at Texas AM, students often utilize multiple re-
sources in order to construct the best possible schedule. These resources are scattered across several websites and students combat this by having to navigate through multiple windows and tab when attempting to create a schedule.
Approach
We propose a single page application that combines these
information sources and improves on the existing interactions in the Howdy
registration application.
User Studies
We conducted preliminary user studies to see what tools students most utilized when creating their schedules. We found the top contenders were degree
requirements, GPA history, an external visual calendar tool, and available time slots.
Prototyping
Taking into account the top external tools from the preliminary user study we set up high fidelity clickable mockups using Adobe XD. Our prototype supports registration and schedule building as a single activity.
User Studies
Our target demographic was A&M upperclassmen, as they would have lots of experience with the current Howdy scheduling process. We asked them to create a mock schedule and observed them directly, then followed up with a questionnaire.
Overall the users were pleased and preferred our Howdy Scheduler experience over the current Howdy experience. They had the following recommendations and are features we would like to implement in the future.
- Using red and green to signify whether a selected course has been added
- Including color in the calendar component
- Adding pre-requisite and co-requisite information to the course information section
Final Product
Using all the feedback, we modified our product and below you can see our final iteration. Here is a demo of the project.
